Takaharu (尊治), better known by the title Emperor Go-Daigo (後醍醐天皇), was Emperor of Japan. He is most famous for launching the Kenmu Restoration to claim more imperial power. His initial attempts were discovered and he was exiled by the Hōjō regents. However, he managed a comeback and overthrew the Kamakura Shogunate entirely by means of capitalizing on the resentment against the regents. He attempted to rule with absolute power, but he lacked sufficient support from the military and they ousted him in favor of a puppet emperor, forcing him to set up a new base of operations at Yoshino. This began the Northern and Southern courts era, he and his successors being of the Southern court. They would be the last emperors to exercise a significant degree of power before the Meiji Restoration.
