Divine Sovereign Go-Horikawa, taboo name Toyohito, was the grandson of Emperor Takakura and the third son of Prince Morisada.

His mother was the daughter of provisional Middle Counselor Fujiwara Motoie. In the seventh month of the third year of the Jōkyū era [1221], he ascended the throne at ten years of age. The former Chancellor, [Fujiwara] Iezane, became Advisor.
母権中納言藤原基家女。承久三年七月,踐祚年十歳。前関白家實攝政。《百鍊抄》
Hōjō Yasutoki and Hōjō Tokifusa were at the Rokuhara to guard the capital. [Hōjō] Yasutoki resided in the northern part while [Hōjō] Tokifusa resided in the southern part. The Rokuhara thus installed two guardians from this moment.
北條泰時、北條時房在六波羅鎮護京師。泰時居北方,時房居南方。六波羅置兩鎮護始此。《將軍執權次第》
In the eighth month, Prince Morisada was honored as Cloistered Emperor.

In the intercalary tenth month, winter, the Minister of the Right, Fujiwara Iemichi became Minister of the Left, the former Minister of the Right, Fujiwara Kintsugu, became Minister of the Right, and Grand Counselor Fujiwara Kintsune became Minister of the Interior. [Fujiwara] Kintsune was the son of [Fujiwara] Sanemune.
冬閏十月,以右大臣藤原家通為左大臣、前右大臣藤原公繼為右大臣、大納言藤原公經為內大臣。公經,實宗之子也。
In the twelfth month, the Minister of Governance, [Fujiwara] Kinfusa, was relieved. Advisor [Fujiwara] Iezane became Minister of Governance, but his duties remained as they were.
十二月,太政大臣公房罷,以攝政家實為太政太臣,職仍舊。
In the fourth month of the first year of the Jōō era [1222], summer, Advisor [Fujiwara] Iezane was relieved from being Minister of Governance.

The Second Emperor Emeritus was relocated from Tosa to Awa.

In the eighth month, autumn, the Minister of the Interior, Fujiwara Kintsune, became Minister of Governance and Grand Counselor Fujiwara Morotsune became Minister of the Interior. [Fujiwara] Morotsune was the son of [Fujiwara] Yorizane.
秋八月,以內大臣藤原公經為太政大臣、大納言藤原師経為內大臣。師經,賴實之子也。
In the fourth month of the second year [1223], spring, the Minister of Governance, [Fujiwara] Kintsune, was relieved.
二年夏四月,太政大臣公經罷。《補任》
In the fifth month, the Cloistered Emperor died. He was given the posthumous title of Go-Takakura.

In the twelfth month, winter, Advisor [Fujiwara] Iezane became Chancellor.
In the sixth month of the first year of the Gennin era [1224], summer, the Autocrat of Kamakura, Hōjō Yoshitoki, died. His son, [Hōjō] Yasutoki, succeeded him in his post. [Hōjō] Yoshitoki had considerable bravery, cunning, and tolerance, surpassing others in such aspects. During the rebellion of Wada Yoshimori, messengers came with urgent news one after another. [Hōjō] Yoshitoki was playing Go with a guest at the time, but his tone and facial expression never changed. He slowly finished the game, then changed his clothes and headed to his office to direct generals. Thus, he defeated [Wada] Yoshimori. At the time, he showed humility on the outside, but harbored treachery in the inside. Every time he was transferred to a new title, he would not style himself with the new title, and when he was made provisional Mayor of the Right Capital District, he still called himself by his former title. After [Minamoto] Yoritomo died, he seized absolute control of the military. He could depose and enthrone emperors as well as promote and demote ministers. The power of the empire was thus concentrated with him. This is why he was assassinated by a close retainer.
元仁元年夏六月,鎌倉執權北條義時卒。《東鑑》子,泰時襲其職。《執權次第》義時沉深有膽略度量過人。《増鏡》和田義盛之叛也,告急者相繼。義時適與客圍碁,辤色不變,徐竟局,更服適府指麾諸将遂破義盛義。時外示謙遜內實陰狡。每遇除拜,不以新官自稱,至右京権大夫猶稱前官。自頼朝薨專執兵權,廢置天子,進退大臣,國家大柄一㱕于己。至是為其近侍所刺殺。《保暦間記》
Hōjō Tokiuji came to reside in the northern part of Rokuhara while Hōjō Tokimori resided in the southern part.

In the eighth month, autumn, the Minister of the Left and concurrently the Left Major General of the Guards, Fujiwara Iemichi, died.

In the twelfth month, winter, the Minister of the Right, Fujiwara Kintsugu, became Minister of the Left, the Minister of the Interior, Fujiwara Morotsune, became Minister of the Right, and Grand Counselor Fujiwara Yoshihira became Minister of the Interior. [Fujiwara] Yoshihira was the younger brother of [Fujiwara] Yoshisuke.

In the seventh month of the first year of the Karoku era [1225], autumn, the former Minister of Governance, [Fujiwara] Yorizane, died.

In the first month of the second year [1226], spring, the Right Junior General of the Guards, Fujiwara Yoritsune, became Grand General who Conquers Barbarians.

In the first month of the first year of the Antei era [1227], spring, the Minister of the Left, Fujiwara Kintsugu, was relieved and died soon afterwards.
安貞元年春正月,左大臣藤原公繼罷尋薨。
In the fourth month, summer, the Minister of the Right, Fujiwara Morotsune, was relieved. The Minister of the Interior, Fujiwara Yoshihira, was made Minister of the Left, provisional Grand Counselor Fujiwara Norizane became Minister of the Right, and provisional Grand Counselor Fujiwara Kanetsune became Minister of the Interior. [Fujiwara] Norizane was the son of [Fujiwara] Michiie; [Fujiwara] Kanetsune was the son of [Fujiwara] Iezane.
夏四月,右大臣藤原師経罷,以內大臣藤原良平為左大臣、権大納言藤原教實為右大臣、権大納言藤原兼經為內大臣。教實,道家之子。兼經,家實之子也。
In the capital, there was a major fire that went all the way to the inner residences.

In the twelfth month of the second year [1228], winter, Chancellor [Fujiwara] Iezane was relieved. The former Advisor, [Fujiwara] Michiie, became Chancellor.
In the eighth month of the first year of the Kangi era [1229], autumn, the former Minister of the Right, Fujiwara Tadatsune, died.

In the twelfth month of the second year [1230], winter, the former Chancellor and Minister of Governance, [Fujiwara] Motofusa, died.
In the fourth month of the third year [1231], summer, the Minister of the Left and concurrently Left Major General of the Guards, Fujiwara Yoshihira, was relieved and the Minister of the Right, Fujiwara Norizane, became Minister of the Left. The Minister of the Interior, Fujiwara Kanetsune, became Minister of the Right and provisional Grand Counselor Fujiwara Saneuji became Minister of the Interior. [Fujiwara] Saneuji was the son of [Fujiwara] Kintsune.
三年夏四月,左大臣兼左近衛大将藤原良平罷,以右大臣藤原教實為左大臣、內大臣藤原兼經為右大臣、権大納言藤原實氏為內大臣。實氏,公經之子也。
In the seventh month, autumn, Chancellor [Fujiwara] Michiie was relieved and the Minister of the Left, Fujiwara Norizane, became Chancellor.
In the tenth month, winter, Emperor Emeritus Tsuchimikado died at Awa. He was thirty-seven.
冬十月,土御門上皇崩于阿波,壽三十七。
Prince Mitsuhito was made Imperial Heir Apparent.
立秀仁親王為皇太子。
In the tenth month of the first year of the Jōei era [1232], winter, provisional Middle Counselor Fujiwara Sadaie presented a new Waka Anthology of Imperial Commission. [Fujiwara] Sadaie was the son of [Fujiwara] Toshinari. [Fujiwara] Sadaie had celestial talent that was unparalleled. He was good at making Waka poetry, and they were extremely meticulous. He once compiled one hundred Waka poems from [the time of] Emperor Tenji to his time, with one person each getting one poem, and wrote it at Nakanoin, Saga. The world thus called it One Hundred People, One Poem Each. His diary was called Records of the Full Moon.
貞永元年冬十月,権中納言藤原定家上新敕撰和歌集。《増鏡》定家,俊成之子也。《系圖》定家天才絕倫,好作和歌曲極其妙。《正徹物語》嘗撰天智帝以来至當時咊歌一百首,人各一首,書于嵯峨中院障子。《明月記》世謂之《百人一首》。其日錄曰《明月記》。
The Emperor passed the throne to the Imperial Heir Apparent. He was on the throne for twelve years with six era name changes: Jōō, Gennin, Karoku, Antei, Kangi, and Jōei. The Imperial Heir Apparent would become Divine Sovereign Shijo on his ascension.
帝傳位於皇太子。在位十二年改元者六日:貞應、元仁、嘉禄、安貞、寛喜、貞永。皇太子立,是為四條天皇。《百鍊抄》
