Hōjō Yasutoki

Hōjō Yasutoki (; 北条 泰時) was Autocrat of the Kamakura Shogunate, which ruled Japan.

Hōjō Yasutoki was born as the son of Hōjō Yoshitoki.

In the aftermath of the Jōkyū rebellion against the Hōjō clan, Hōjō Yasutoki was posted at the imperial capital to watch for any dissent. When his father died in 1224, Hōjō Yasutoki succeeded him as Autocrat of the Kamakura Shogunate.

When Emperor Shijō died without any heirs, it was suggested that a son of Emperor Juntoku, who supported the Jōkyū rebellion, become the new emperor. Hōjō Yasutoki infamously declared, "That being so, I would depose the new lord and enthrone the son of Emperor Tsuchimikado! What is there to fear?" The court decided to enthrone Emperor Go-Saga to comply with Hōjō Yasutoki.
