Nijō Michihira

Nijō Michihira (1287 - 1335; 二条 道平) was Chancellor of Japan in the apex of his career. He was a proponent of the Kenmu Restoration.

Nijō Michihira was born into the Nijō clan, a branch of the Fujiwara clan, as the son of Nijō Kanemoto. He thus may be called Fujiwara Michihira in old texts.

In the second lunar month of 1317, Nijō Michihira was made Chancellor, but in the twelfth month, early 1318, he was dismissed in favor of Ichijō Uchitsune. In 1328, he was made Chancellor again.

He encouraged the exiled Emperor Go-Daigo to return to the capital to reclaim power. In response to some people commenting, "His Majesty should undergo rites as if he ascended the throne a second time," Nijō Michihira stated, "Though your Majesty has been an outcast for a long time, you should personally receive the sacred imperial seal. This minister of yours believes you should return to the palace and undergo the ceremony as if you merely returned from an imperial tour." Emperor Go-Daigo sided with Nijō Michihira as he believed he never lost his throne. When Emperor Go-Daigo regained authority, he gave Nijō Michihira the title of Minister of the Left and made him head of the Nijō clan due to his loyalty. Nijō Michihira tutored Prince Tsunenaga.

His descendants maintained the Nijō clan and were also adopted into the Takatsukasa, Kujō, Ichijō clans. In short, out of the five main branches of the Fujiwara clan, four branches would eventually be headed by his descendants.
